5 Best Views Of The City Skyline

by Abigail Hannah

Nothing beats a gorgeous city skyline, and Auckland is no exception. The iconic Sky Tower appears to be the pivotal point, wherever you view the Auckland CBD from.

These are my favourite places to watch the city - whether it’s watching the sun rise or set over the skyscrapers, or the lights coming out at dark, these are must-do’s for anyone who lives in or visits Auckland.

Mt Eden

This maunga, right outside the CBD is a destination that can’t be missed, especially as it is the tallest volcanic cone in the Auckland region. The views from the peak are incredible. There are a bunch of different spots where you can get panoramic views, so don’t hesitate to wander around and see them all. One of my favourite things to do is to take a picnic dinner up and watch the sunset.

Mt Victoria

To get a different perspective of the city, Mt Victoria provides a spectacular view, across the Waitemata harbour towards the cityscape. The best time to head up here is for sunrise, while you watch the rays of light touch the tall buildings. On a summers day, the harbour is often filled with sail boats, making it obvious where Auckland got it’s name: City of Sails.

From a Ferry

Another exceptional view of the skyline is from the water itself. Catch a ferry from Britomart to anywhere across the Waitemata Harbour and you’re bound to get spectacular views as you leave the Auckland isthmus behind. Birkenhead, Devonport, Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island are some of my favourite destinations by ferry.

Sky Tower Sky Deck

Why look at the Sky Tower from afar, when you could go inside it?! This iconic building, built in 1997 is the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. The best fun is looking at the city around you and figuring out where you live, where you work, and to see the miniature city bustle by below you.

Te Atatu

Finally, the Te Atatu peninsula offers another perspective on the city skyline. From here, the harbour bridge is a prominent feature, lit up at night, along with the Sky Tower and city lights. See if you can identify the different hills around the city and spot the tallest volcanic cone, Mt Eden.
